The Purpose

I thought I was a perfectionist, until I never got anything done. I realized then, I am basically just a procrastinator.

With cakes and pies on my mind, I walked into a bakery and stood there at the front door.

“Can I help you?” asked the baker, as she rolled up her sleeves. “I’ll have two custard donuts, please.” As she opened a white bag, over the crinkling effect, I felt like I was yelling “Do you make all of these donuts yourself?” I wondered. I didn’t actually ask the question because of the effort it would take to try to talk over the noise of the bag; so the idea passed. Strike one.

After she handed me my change, she said, “You can have a seat at the counter if you’d like, otherwise, have a good day.” As she turned to walk back into the kitchen, her smile began to fade. I took one donut from the bag and as I did this, an overwhelming idea came over me. I was sure this was my time, but it quickly passed. Strike two.

As I finished the donut and wiped my greasy hands on the bag (for lack of a napkin), I considered eating the next one. I needed a coffee though. As I walked out the door, the bell made a sound similar to most and I stood there; holding the door open. At that moment all my focus seemed to fall on my fingertips because clenched in between my fist was a white bag with a custard donut inside. Mine. I realized now, all I need to do is take the donut out of the bag, but I need a coffee. As, I did that the door closed and when I turned around I noticed the sign on the door “If Not For The Greater Good, Do It For The Baked Good”.

So, I ran home. Put the donut on the table and finally made it to the bathroom. The reason I left the house was for toilet paper. As I wiped my ass with the white bag, the crinkling noise transported my mind back to the bakery. I almost shit myself while running home. I almost shit myself running home while I ran past probably a dozen businesses that I could have stopped at and used their restroom. With a big smile on my face, I screamed “If NOT FOR THE GREATER GOOD, DO IT FOR THE BAKED GOOD”! Right there, on the toilet, I found my purpose.

I wrote a short story.
