How to diagram a sentence
Begin to diagram a sentence by drawing a horizontal line which is the base line of the sentence that you are going to diagram. The horizontal line is separated by a vertical line in the centre.
Subject and Verb
Birds fly.
Birds – subject fly – verb
First draw a horizontal line below the words. Then draw a vertical line that passes through the horizontal line and separate the two words.
Subject, Verb, Direct Object
Birds – subject read – verb books - object
Subject, Verb, Compound Objects
Students – subject read – verb books, articles – two objects
Subject, verb, Direct Object, Indirect Object
I - subject gave – verb my mother - indirect object my keys – direct object
Subject, Verb, Object, Adverb
Students – subject read – verb books – object quietly – adverb
Subject, Verb, Object, Adjective
Teachers – subject are – verb leaders – object effective - adjective
Compound Sentence
Richard walked, but I drove.
Richard – subject walked – verb but – conjunction I – subject drove – verb
Complex sentence
I jumped when he popped the balloon.
I jumped – main clause; when he popped the balloon – subordinate clause
Subject, verb, preposition, object
Prepositions create a relationship with other words in a sentence. Prepositions can occur anywhere in a sentence. Prepositions are followed by an object (noun or pronoun) in a sentence.
A preposition is placed on a diagonal line beneath the word it modifies. The object of the preposition appears on a horizontal line attached to the line of the preposition.
The visitors arrived from El Paso on schedule.
Conjunctions
Conjunctions appear as dotted lines connecting similar elements.
John and Tim love football.
John, Tim – Subjects love – verb football - object
