have returned and my daughter and grandson need you,” Rodric says firmly.

I take a moment to let his words sink in. Threats from long ago can only mean one thing, the man who supposedly killed my wife has finally reared his head.

Just as my Emery is back from the dead. Same as my son. A son that I should have had the chance to meet a long time ago. And just like that the love I had for a woman who held my heart since she was sixteen turns to hatred. As much as I don’t want to see her, I’ll do as Rodric asks and protect her and my son. After all she is my wife, but it will be done with a price.

A price only she will be able to pay.

Chapter Two

Emery

Hugging Stone to me, I glare at my father’s back as he stares out the window behind his desk. He’d just gotten off the phone with the one person I’ve ever allowed to hold my heart. No one since him has been able to get close to touching it. And now my father, after ten fuckin’ years, is sending me back to him.

Glancing down at my son, I give him a smile. He looks so much like his daddy that sometimes it hurts to look at him. But I’d never not look at my little boy, Stone. He’s my reminder that my life had once been full of happiness.

Now my life solely revolves around the family business and my son.

Between Demi, Liam and myself, we help handle the different sections that come with being an arms dealer, leaving father to mainly handle the customers. Demi and I have always been expert shots, having trained since we were ten years old. And for the past nine years, after I recovered, we became partners when it comes to testing out the new products that come in. The two of us work together handling demonstrations along with making sure there’s nothing wrong with each gun we plan to distribute. Where I handle all the semi-automatics, Demi handles the handguns. As the two of us work closely with the guns, we leave Liam to work with our father on the logistics. It will all be his to take over when it comes time for father to retire.

“Why?” I can barely speak due to the constriction taking hold of my throat.

“Because it’s time Emmy,” he says without glancing in my direction.

“I need you to explain to me more than just ‘it’s time Emmy’,” I snapped. I hate when he does that, acting like this isn’t a huge deal for me.

I mean this is Samuel we’re talking about. My husband. A man I haven’t seen since the day I’d been shot and almost lost not just my life but Stone’s. And the very same man, I’m sure will hate me for the rest of my life for having deceived him.

“Emery, it’s not safe here anymore for you or Stone. Liam and I received word you are being targeted, so is Stone,” he sighs.

“Okay, it’s not like this is the first time and I’ve proven I can handle any threat coming toward me. How many lives have I had to take over the years? Too many to worry about that’s for sure, so I don’t see why you would contact him. Not after keeping us apart for so long. Why let him think I’ve been dead for so long, only to rip open old wounds?” I argue. My heart pounding in my chest.

“I know you are capable of protecting yourself and Stone,” he says as he turns from the window and walks toward me glancing down, he smiles at Stone. “Why don’t you go find your Uncle Liam? If I’m not mistaken, he’s got something to show you.”

Glancing from my father then up to me, Stone being the smart kid he is, he doesn’t say anything but nods his head and runs off.

“The day you were shot, I blamed Samuel. I told him he couldn’t protect you and I thought that for a long time. I almost lost you. I don’t know what I’d do if I were to ever lose any of you. By claiming you’d died in surgery I got rid of a major threat against you. However, that threat has come back. The man who’d shot you, has been spotted several times in the surrounding area,” my dad says the moment my son is out of hearing distance.

“Why didn’t you tell me this before you called Samuel? It should have been my decision,” I snap.

“Because Emery this man isn’t just anyone. He is a part of the Alcazar Cartel,” he mutters.

“I don’t give a damn. I should have been told first,” I scream, unable to hold it in. I’d never wanted to leave Samuel, and for that I resented my father for what he’d done to the two of us. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to face him. Besides, we may still be married legally but that’s about it. We’d be complete strangers who share a child now.

“I need to go make some calls Emery and you need to pack. You and Stone will be leaving in three hours. I have already arranged for you to be met at the landing strip when the jet lands. Scorch and his club will be able to protect you. I should never have taken you from him the way I did,” he admits.

“No, you shouldn’t have, but you were doing what you thought was best for me. However, when I wanted to contact him during my recovery you should have let me. I don’t know this Scorch person. It sure as hell is not my husband,” I mumble. I’d heard how ruthless and cold hearted he’s become and for that it’s my fault.

“I’m sorry Emmy,” he rasps while pulling me into him for a hug. “It’s past time I did the right thing. If not for my
